Day by Day the Manna Fell

Day by Day the Manna Fell

THE BIBLE RELATES that the Israelites, traveling for forty years to the Promised Land, were not in one place long enough for crops to be planted, grown and harvested, and that their sustenance was provided in the form of manna — apparently out of nowhere — when the food they brought with them out of Egypt ran out . . . and it was always just enough to meet the daily need.

This mirrors the experience of Paul and Susan as we participate with those of you who are choosing to engage in the continuing Exodus from imagined independence to the Atonement of Brotherhood, reunified under the Fatherhood which gives the Sonship identity.

Now, one might say, where did the manna come from? Did Moses send out frequent requests for support to maintain the Israelites for forty years? And the answer is, of course not. The lessons being learned were different from the lessons being taught and learned through the Course and our activities today, because we are at the end of the journey.

Indeed, at this present time and place in the journey my task, my purpose, my Function is not mine alone. It is ours, . . accounting for my statement in the Course, where it says:

“For this alone I need; that you will hear the words I speak, and give them to the world. You are my voice, my eyes, my feet, my hands through which I save the world. The Self from which I call to you is but your own. To Him we go together.”

Brotherhood is not regained by means of pleasant and positive thoughts, although they do cause changes in behavior for the better. No. Brotherhood is regained and reestablished as a result of caring, as a result of actual involvement, actual sensitivity, which requires actually paying attention to another’s needs from the perspective of the holy instant and thereby behaving in a way that relieves them of those needs! This is what fits at the end of the Exodus — at the entrance to the Promised Land of Atonement.

The Course cannot be read like other spiritual books. It is not a self-help course. It is an invitation and active promotion of change! Of sudden changes of perception which it calls miracles! Its message can be overlooked, ignored, put off until a later day, but it can’t be changed. And its message is a demand . . . if one wants to wake up! It’s a demand to give up a so-called safety and artificial peace of separation and isolation — to abandon the divorce from the Father and the resulting misperception of Family as “strangers.”

The fact is that it doesn’t take a lot of money to do what we are doing. It takes more to do it when there is less to do it with, because persistence of Vision, persistence of caring, requires the persistence of Giving. Good credit and the use of credit cards makes that possible, but slowly increases debt and monthly expenses when the necessary increase of expressed brotherly love isn’t recognized as essential to the reestablishment of Brotherhood and the end of the Exodus.

And so, in spite of the insufficiency and the invitation to fear which it presents, Paul repeatedly provides me with his voice, his eyes, his hands and his attention to care, and to provide what relieves everyone of the misunderstanding which justifies “distance,” “independence,” and the “borders” of privacy, which place everyone’s salvation in his own hands, instead of OURS as Brothers, and delays the Atonement because the point is missed!

No one is being invited to do anything Paul and Susan and I aren’t doing. And it’s not easy! Changing takes work! The miracle of a changed perception is often not gifted to us until we gift it to another. Isn’t that what the Course teaches? “What you give, you get to keep.” I understand this for myself as well as you. And you can understand it about another. But you need to understand it for yourself, so that you don’t turn the difficulty of it on yourself and overlook the fact that it’s the last step of the Atonement, the return Home, and the end of Brothers appearing to be strangers . . . and even enemies. All of this is embodied in every invitation for financial support which Paul and I extend.

Contributions since the last snapshot amounted to $729, which did not meet the need — meaning things are already in arrears, there is less than $100 in the bank, and the large payment due in five days, on the 19th amounts to $8,313 this month because the credit card was used to take up the slack and keep things moving. This invitation is necessary . . . and as you can see, it means a lot more than what one might think.

Thank you to everyone!
